Meeting of the MED AGRISLES Project on Gozo (Malta) |
The MED AGRISLES Project partners met from the 15th to the 17th of June 2011, and that was a particularly fruitful meeting. Open with an introductory speech made by the Hon. Mrs Giovanna Debono, Minister for Gozo, the meeting proceeded with the participation of representatives of the Ministry for Gozo, and the Minister for agriculture and rural affairs of Malta.
The first day was devoted to the AGRISLES Steering Committee meeting, and has allowed to detail the strategy for the final phase and the follow up of the project. The second day was the occasion for partners to prepare the integration of project's results into their national and regional policies, on the basis of a review made by partners: each making the link with the current 2007-2013 programmes, but also the new common agricultural policy being prepared towards the 2020.
The next step will be concluded with a seminar to be held in Cyprus from the 24th to the 26th of October 2011. It will allow partners to consolidate their proposals for the project's follow up at transnational level, with the creation of the AGRISLES Network, as well as for the contribution of the islands to the new CAP-2020.
Finally, the third day was an opportunity for partners to discover the agricultural and rural reality of this island of Gozo, which on many respects may serve as a model for the definition of a sustainable insular agriculture. They have in particular visited the Xewkija experimental farm, whose future is being redesigned within the broader frame of the "Eco-Gozo" project for the sustainable development of the island, promoted by the Ministry for Gozo, partner of AGRISLES, in partnership with the university of Malta. This project is in particular subject to an exchange with a very similar one promoted by Corsica in connection with the revision of the missions and operation of its experimental farm of Altiani. These two twin-projects, which will be on the agenda of a next meeting of AGRISLES in Corsica, provide the opportunity to develop a joint pilot-project between Corsica and Malta, with a view to anticipate the inter-insular integration of poles of competences for innovation in agriculture that is planned within the frame of the future AGRISLES network.
The local press has provided a wide coverage of the event that represented this MED AGRISLES project from the 15th to the 17th of June, 2011 in Malta (see in particular http://gozonews.com/18112/gozo-hosts-conference-on-agriculture-in-the-mediterrenean/), and it is possible to have a first glance and discover the particularly interesting reality of this island of Gozo through the photo gallery of this website, and also to get informed about the progress of the reflection of partners by downloading the communications presented during the second day. |
